Linda Shenk and Mallory Riesberg present "Community Growers"

Linda Shenk and Mallory Riesberg present "Community Growers" Program for Youth in Des Moines  at The Growing Sustainable Communities Conference in Dubuque, Iowa. The conference took place over two days (October 4th and 5th), and allowed for the sharing of research and ideas about creating more resilient communities.

The duo's presentation, Fostering the Next Generation of Big Data Scientists & Sustainable City Planners:ext tA “Community Growers” Program for Youth in Des Moines, IA, demonstrated the advancing role that technology can play in community development when paired with "21st century skills" and community agents. Their research involved the development of a community garden project, generated through data collection and GIS-Based Modeling and executed through the partnership of the Youth Leaders of The Boys and Girls Club of Central Iowa and Eat Greater Des Moines. The collaberation accomplished the empowerment of the Youth Leaders in their community while also demonstrating methods for providing better food access at a local scale. The project also established an identity for the Youth Leaders who discovered the power that they hold in changing their communities.
